Roundhouse Lake
Roundhouse Lake nature reserve is a fine example of the purity of habitat that can be achieved through the careful and sympathetic restoration of gravel pits. The large open lake plays host to a large number of wintering wildfowl, including wigeon, red-crested pochard, goldeneye, pochard and tufted duck. Great crested and little grebes are also frequently found on the lake, and sightings of kingfisher are not unlikely. Otters are also known to visit the lake regularly.
The Fine Foundation Chesil Beach Centre
A walk up the beach reveals stunning sea views and a panorama including Portland and the Fleet Lagoon. The brand new Fine Foundation Chesil Beach Centre offers family friendly displays about the beach and its wildlife along with an underwater camera and a bird watching window to see the array of birdlife that visit the mudflats. In spring the shingle turns into a sea of pink thrift that stretches towards Portland. Sea campion, kidney vetch, yellow horn poppy and other coastal specialists are also found on the beach.
Bouldnor Forest
Wander along the forest tracks between the pine trees to look and listen for unusual birds such as crossbill, goldcrest
Oakenhill
In the summer butterflies and bumblebees abound, visiting gorse flowers across the heathland, and reptiles such as common lizards and adders bask out under the sun. Buzzards can be heard mewing as they circle overhead, and deer can be seen if you remain quiet and still.
