Finemere Wood has a regal history, being part of a woodland once used by kings and queens for hunting wild boar. The reserve is now a mixture of broadleaved woodland, patches of scrub with paths and wild rides, with an historic meadow, ponds and two streams. A good place to see butterflies such as the purple emperor and white admiral, and an excellent place to see and hear birds such as migrant warblers, song thrushes and bullfinches.

Such an array of habitats has attracted a diversity of plant and animal life. The exposed layers of Dry Sandford Pit's low sand and limestone cliffs illustrate the various stages as the sea that once covered Oxfordshire receded. The cliffs contain many corals and fossils of marine creatures dating back to the Jurassic era.

Here you will see some of the best displays of dragonflies and damselflies, including the downy emerald dragonfly and the rare small red damselfly, as well as wild flowers and birds.

Decoy Heath consists of bogland, heathland and woodland and is one of the best sites for dragonflies and damselflies in Berkshire. Half the reserve is woodland, the other half is heathland that has a population of the grayling butterfly, a nationally-declining and now protected butterfly. Insects are attracted to flowers that grow by the many pools, and a pool created in 2006 has significantly expanded the available habitat for dragonflies and damselflies.

This sloping old meadow dotted with large anthills has a variety of wild flowers and a wealth of insects.

Chawridge Bank is a small area of old Berkshire grassland. Adder's-tongue and pepper-saxifrage are just two of its typical ancient meadow species. Bluebells flower along the northern boundary, and an old boundary hedge has pollarded oaks and some beautiful maples. There is a wealth of insects, and large ant-hills are found as a result of the ground being left unploughed. Skylarks, green and great spotted woodpeckers are among the bird life found here.
