Rachel Shaw, the Trust’s Communications Officer, has experience in many fields (literally!) of conservation. This evening we are invited to join her on an illustrated tour.

The Philippines is one of the world's hotspots for biodiversity; discover more about wildlife and wildlife conservation projects there in comparison with those in Lincolnshire.

Admission is by donation at the door (minimum £1.00) which includes tea/coffee and biscuits.

Rush Furlong is a fragment of the once extensive system of strip farming in the Isle of Axholme that has by chance survived. The nearby land is now mostly arable, but this small meadow grassland strip has been managed only by hay-cutting for as long as can be traced.

Introduction to Spiders Course

Join a one day course with two spider specialists, who will introduce this fascinating groups of invertebrates. Richard Wilson is a consultant ecologist specialising in invertebrate ecology with a particular interest in upland spiders ecology and conservation; and the Yorkshire and Northumberland recorder for the national recording scheme (http://srs.britishspiders.org.uk). Dr Geoff Oxford is an honorary fellow at the University of York with a particular interest in evolutionary genetics in spiders. He is a past president of the British Arachnological Society (www.britishspiders.org.uk) and is keen to convey his enthusiasm for the group to the wider public. The course is designed for anyone in the North East who would like to develop skills on the identification of spiders and help improve our data records. The course will start with a brief introduction to spiders, survey methodologies, families and literature. This will be followed by collecting specimens in the field using the techniques discussed. The remainder of the session will be identification at microscopes using named specimens and/or material collected in the field.

Participants will be guided on specimen identification to the correct taxonomic group and workshop leaders will endeavour to identify to species level. To reliably identify to species level please note that some specimens will have to be killed in alcohol. Others can be placed in pots to look at alive and then released.

Please ensure you wear clothing appropriate to the weather conditions on the day and have on some sturdy footwear. This event will go ahead in poor weather, but in extreme conditions may have to be rescheduled.
